21) Message boards : Number crunching : CPU Usage down? (Message 855)

Here is an update: my current PS3GRID WU has been crunching at ~100% CPU for 42 hours now. I have no idea if any work is actually being done or if the CPU is simply spinning in circles. There is something going on here. Does anyone from the project (ie. someone who *should* take this project seriously) know why this has happened?

This is clearly a problem but nothing has changed over the last few months. This project is seriously lacking a leader and that\'s really too bad because there is so much potential here to do some good. Try not to give me the standby response of \"sorry for the problems, this is a BETA project you know!\" That\'s BS, if this were a BETA project then perhaps our fearless leader would be interested in the problems that this project has. Instead, problems with WU\'s occur often without a fix in sight or as often is the case, work is lacking in the first place (see the server, again!)

The bottom line is this: the contributors to this project deserve a voice in this but too often there is no one around to listen and if there is I get the feeling that that certain someone wouldn\'t give a second thought to it in the first place. Sir, there is something wrong with either the BOINC build or your program, it\'s time to figure out what that is.

Hi,
Maybe the CPU usage is tied to the new Wu\'s??? Or you have another problem.

I was thinking the same thing, but this has happened numerous times in the past as well. At some point the CPU usage drops to below 100 and never goes back up again. It usually takes a very drastic move such as a complete reinstall of BOINC. It became so bad with the pen drive that I actually had to reinstall YDL from scratch. Thanks for the reply. Anyone else have any info?

In the past I have noticed that PS3Grid workunits take about 140% CPU (as seen from the TOP command.) Occasionally this drops down to 100% or less but never reaches the typical 140% mark again unless I completely uninstall the entire BOINC program and then reinstall BOINC all over again.

There is one commonality in all of this (and the same occurred in the past when I used the pen drive) yoyo@home. For some reason YoYo@home workunits are very unstable on my PS3. To me it seems that BOINC does not release all of the CPU back to PS3Grid when it restarts. YoYo@home is my backup project when PS3Grid goes down. But nearly always, BOINC Manager or PS3Grid is corrupt after a yoyo@home WU starts (and eventually fails).

So my question is this, does anyone else see this particular problem happen to them? and, is this a BOINC Manager problem or a PS3GRID/YOYO problem?

Tim

Also, I\'m going to try and let the current PS3Grid WU finish but it is already at 28 hours and running between 90-100% CPU, if it appears that it will not make it I\'ll probably abort and then reinstall *again*.

Now it\'s the second day my PS3s are running on idle because of \'no work from project\'. There are three rigs in the top twenty that suffer this fate. Is there anything I/we can do to get new WU\'s soon ?

Grab some yoyo Workunits :)

I just signed on from a computer that is public. Normally when I do this I unckeck the box that says something like \"stay signed on to this computer\" but with this project it is impossible to sign in if you do not check the box.

If you try it just reloads the page and says you must be \"signed on to do that\" even though I already am. Seems like there is a cache or cookie problem here. Just thought I would point this out.

I\'m having troubles again.
A PS3 job was running for 30+ hours with no progress.
It shows 89% work done now but it remained the same since maybe 10h.
I can hear the fan so it must be crunching.
Is it always starting from the beginning after doing a yoyo-job?
Is there a bug-fix being worked on to make it stable to switch between 2 projects w/o issues?

I ditched the PS3GRID LIVE USB install and installed the full YDL and everything has been fine since. Before, all of my yoyo and PS3GRID jobs ran for dozens of hours with no progress. It seems you are going through the same thing here. It also seems there is no intention of fixing the USB Pen Drive any time soon so try the full YDL instead. Good Luck.

27) Message boards : Multicore CPUs : YDL/BOINC manager problem (Message 780)

has described in my post...

http://www.ps3grid.net/forum_thread.php?id=153

...I have the same problems runnin a newer version of YDL (5.0.2).

After processing the first work unit, after a reboot, now boinc works more or less for 13 minutes and then the task goes in defunct/zombie.

No way to complete a single work unit anymore...

Anyone as some hints?

Thanks a lots...

I still do not know how to force BOINC to open at startup (not boot, just when the \"desktop\" comes into view). I basically go into the file system and physically start BOINC and all goes well.

On a side note. Every so often, especially when switching to YoYo from PS3GRID, the CPU usage for YoYo dives down to below the typical 150-170% as seen in TOP. It shows about 4-6 instances of YoYo running (but the same WU) and each has roughly 25 to 45% CPU. After switching back to PS3GRID CPU usage never goes above 99%. After reboot, PS3GRID starts and it is back to ~150%. The tricky part is, these WU for both projects remain in memory after the switch even though my preference is to take them out of memory after the switch. Something going on here?

I installed the full version of YDL found on the front page in hopes of getting away from the problems with the USB Build. Of course this did not help, in fact I now have completely different problems.

I installed YDL and BOINC about two days ago and everything worked well, I even submitted one WU! Today I shut down to do some gaming and upon restart the problems began.

1. BOINC does not start at boot, how do I make certain that in the future BOINC will start without my intervention?

2. After getting BOINC started BM shows PS3Grid running but CPU time does not advance and when I looked in TOP there was no process running and CPU usage was at 3% when it normally is pegged at 150-170%. Obviously I am doing something wrong here.

Could someone please point me in the right direction and remember that I now have a combined 3 days worth of experience with linux (read: zero experience).

Thanks!

Tim

Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering what was going on. I guess its common for ps3grid boinc runs to go for about 30-35 hours then? What kinda of credit return can be expected for such a run?

A typical Workunit will last between 24-27 hours and you can expect around 3,700 credits

I agree. Restarting BOINC, or rebooting has always fixed it for me. No need to abort.

This is a bug that needs to be looked at though given that 24+ hours of work lost \"costs\" us over 3700 credits. This is not such a huge deal for almost any other BOINC project but it is such a massive waste of resources here.
