I followed the instructions correct, got the right versions of BOINC and nvidia driver. However, I still cannot obtain WUs. Does anyone know why?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that your card is a borderline card in that it may or may not run a WU and if it does it will be very slow. With all the issues with the DCF and people with high end cards are having the server may just not be sending you any WUs. Anybody else have and idea?

I started GPU processing with that card in one of my machines. Under Windows Vista and Boinc 6.3.21 it downloaded 4 tasks but I had to abort them all on the fourth day as the first task hadn't got half way and they were all going to miss their deadlines.

It is possible it could be quicker under Linux but if you don't already have a dual boot capability I wouldn't suggest you try it just for this. It could be the server code has become more restrictive since I got my first GPU wu's three week ago and is blocking 8400GS regardless of operating system.

My other machine has an 8600 GTS card and is currently taking about 2.5 days per unit.

See this thread for a list of possible upgrades.

In the end I replaced the 8400GS with a GTX260 which seemed to offer almost as much as the GTX280 at about 2/3rds the price locally. The GTX260 is currently taking around 11 hours per GPU unit.

If you decide on that sort of upgrade you'll need to ensure your PSU is up to the juob and check the size of the card. It takes two slots on the back pannel and is slightly longer than the width of the ATX motherboard. I had to remove the front fan (mounted on the motherboard side of the hard disk rack) to get mine in. Fortunately the temperatures haven't climbed by more than 1 or 2 degrees on the CPU or mainboard.
