Hiya.

Lately I've been having trouble with GPUGRID tasks not really... doing anything.
For example, yesterday I had one running for 7 hours (when downloaded it ETA'd 6 hours), after 7 hours a whopping 2.7% had been completed, and GPU usage was 0%, with occasional spiking of 70% every 20 to 40 seconds. GPUGRID used to make continual full use of the GPU cards. The time left was also stuck at about 2 minutes, and had been for about 2 hours.

I have tried enabling / disabling things like beta, different versions. the only thing I have no tried is enabling long runs, as my cards (I have two cards, a 650Ti & GTS450) won't handle them.

Any ideas? According to the nVidia website, I am using the latest stable drivers.

Hey. All gpugrid.net work packages need a cpu to feed it. You have a quad-core processor. Leave a one core-free so that the processor can support the graphics cards in its calculations.

BOINC Manager, go to cpu usage (preferences) and select that you want to use 75% of the processors so one core is always free for the graphics card.

I've just tried this now. So far, its not making much, if any difference. But i'll see how it goes.

I've altered number of processors to use to 75% from 100%, and changed the amount of CPUTime allowed for BOINC from 50% to 75%

You should also change the amount of CPU time allowed for BOINC from 75% to 100%. GPU tasks need a constant supply of CPU time for the GPU to run efficiently.

Hope that helps.

Note: Since GPUGrid's process/thread priorities (viewable in Windows using Process Explorer) are higher than normal BOINC-CPU-project process/thread priorities... "freeing a CPU" is not necessary for GPUGrid to keep a GPU substantially busy.

Sure, "freeing a CPU" will give you better GPUGrid performance, but if the GPUGrid task doesn't fully utilize the full core (non-Kepler's, for instance), it would actually waste resources that could otherwise be used by CPU projects. Since I prefer to not waste any resources, I leave "% Processors" set to 100%.

Also, the advice about setting "CPU Time" to 100% IS necessary when doing any GPU work in BOINC, so far as I know.

No, I have tested that. You can set it lower. However that will result in the GPU WU to start and stop every xx seconds. So eventually it will take way longer to complete. Its like a flesh light, on-off, on-off, ...

Right.. which works really badly. Hence you have to set it to 100% for smooth crunching.

I want to jump into this topic with one of my host doing not much on short runs often. I have the pentium 4 running in mix of long and short (for publicationreasons) and it seems often the short runs crash the driver (http://www.gpugrid.net/result.php?resultid=7397492 as example) and the machine stays then on 99% GPU Load but on only 40degrees and with very long runtimes until i reset it. So at the beginning there was 24h+ until i regonized it but now im aware of it and after the last crash last night and again long runtimes i set it to long runs only and plan to upgrade the driver on monday. Whats the latest really stable driver for xp 32? the actual 331.xx one or something above? now i use 301 on this host. Or does that failure has nothing to do with that? I tried several settings on the card but the problem stayed and really only on short from what i can see.

I have the same experience with my 660, SR a lot of error, LR smooth. I have used the latest non-beta driver, and now the latest beta 331.41 but this in on Win7.
