1) Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : statistic on GPU failure rates (Message 13413)

Well I can say I've had 0 failures in what will soon be a year of running GPUGrid.

4x GTX 260 and a 9800 GTX +

[edit] 2x BFG & 2x XFX on the 260's [/edit]

OC'd during the winter, and stock the rest of the year (Arizona has 9 months of summer, just about time to OC them again)

Good ventilation, good power supplies, and a slight bump of the fans on the card (to about 70 - 75%) seem to keep them running quite happily.

We will be releasing a cpu app soon. It will only provide a small number of WUs as it is complementary to our main application and it is supposed to serve people who does not have a gpu.

The idea is that you will be able to opt out of the cpu application.

We are not sure how this will work. So, comments are welcome.

..

Couple questions:

It sounds like these will be different WU's than those crunched by the GPU's is that right?

How long do you anticipate the CPU WU's to run (a rough estimate based on internal testing and machine speed for that time)

I like the idea, though definitely appreciate the heads up before issuing tasks. Currently throttling all CPU's at some other goals at the moment, but might give them a try after those goals are met.

Only suggestion would be to perhaps have Use CPU option as "No" by default, as many do not visit the forums or the site frequently, and might get a bit peeved if they suddenly notice CPU tasks on their machines.

I think it would go a long way to present a concise view of what each WU is, who and what it is for, and what the objective is for that type of WU.

I know that there is some info on the science pages, and there are posts about new types of WU's, however a little matrix on the front page would be very helpful I think.

perhaps with the following info:
what each section of the WU name represents.
what is the objective/goal for crunching that WU type.
how many WU's are anticipated in that batch.
what % completion is done for that WU type.

I know that a lot of the info is distributed throughout the site, but a small, simple table would be beneficial, because I think many people will not take the time to look through the whole site. I know I had not taken much time to do so until my pdb viewer automatically indexed one of the files in the slots directory and nearly died trying to render a preview. that got me curious, lol.

It seems after upgrading to a newer version of BOINC, the tasks are now properly obeying the cache settings. Apparently, the problem was with BOINC 6.4.2, it would grab 1 WU for each core of the CPU, even if cache was set to 0

I think it would be helpful, and both in the best interest of the project as well as the crunchers, if in the GPUGRID preferences there was an option for how many WU's should be allowed to download at a time. I'm not sure how feasible it is, but it could be quite helpful.

I have noticed that often, with a quad core CPU and 1 GPU, it will try to maintain 4 tasks, which leads to a longer turn around time, which leads to many of the tasks being redundant. If there were an option to set for example, MAX_WU's = 2, then it would improve turn around time for those that can take advantage of it. I know it's not going to help some users, but I think it could be good for many. Note: option would be for concurrent tasks, not daily tasks.
