1) Message boards : Multicore CPUs : past deadline (Message 11959)

Sam,
Each project sets it's own rules for when/how it grants credit for work.

Most projects will still grant you credit if you return the WU late, but before the resent WU gets returned by someone else.

BOINC has no way to know what the credit policy is for a given project, and so will continue to process a WU past deadline.

I haven't looked at your specific situation, but that's the general guidelines.

Mark

PS. I'm trying to find a BOINC PS3 client that is more up to date than 5.x, but works correctly, so if you can suggest one, I'm all ears.

Still can't upload, and I'm getting an HTTP error when attempting a scheduler request.

So something isn't working. However, the website is up and running, since I can reach the forum...

If this problem continues for more than 2-3 hours, and your Internet access is OK, you might want to abort the WU and the transfer and get another WU. I had one of my hosts get stuck with one of these types of errors. Even though I was getting WU on other hosts, there seem to be some stuck ones lately.

As has been mentioned here in the forum several times - 6.6.2x are BETA versions of BOINC, and have had some problems with GPU scheduling. Suggest you fall back to version 6.5.0 of BOINC client and see if you still have problems.

Somewhere in the 6.6.23 or .24 timeframe, there were some changes made to GPU card detection in BOINC client, and if the GPU cards were not identical, BOINC would refuse to use the lesser card. I believe that change was withdrawn, but if you are trying to run multiple GPU cards, I would stay away from those versions.

Any ideas for the error 193 with the 185.13 drivers on Debian 64b ?

Just a check on your environment. I just brought up GPUGRID on my Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit machine. Brand new install. And every WU would error out in seconds. No error 193, but it gave me the "output file absent" message.

Check to see if the 32-bit runtime libraries are installed. If not, try that on the next set of WU's. After I installed the IA32 libraries, and the "microcode.ctl" package, the next set of WU's are running fine.

I'm not saying this will fix your problem, but it's something to check.

I'm running nvidia 180.11 drivers, since that's what Ubuntu "likes". And trying to upgrade to the released versions from Nvidia's website just wasn't going too well, so I reverted to "stock".

Also, I'm running an 8600GTS card, and BOINC 6.6.15.

OK, so given that I can spend about $220 in total, which option is better for GPUgrid?

2 9800GT 512MB cards (EVGA, 512M, stock clock 600)

or

1 GTX260 (MSI, 896MB, OC'd to 575 from factory)

7) Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : How to install Boinc 6.3.21 as a service on XP? (Message 3868)
Posted 5610 days ago by computerguy09
Black Beard,
Something that no-one has mentioned in response to your original question, is that you can't run BOINC in service/protected mode on a machine that you want to run GPUGRID on. If you run it in protected mode, it doesn't correctly detect your GPU type, and so will error out on every GPUGRID WU.

One thing I did notice about the 6.3.x BOINC stream is that it did load more work than it did under 6.2 and earlier. However, after awhile, it figured out how much work really could get done on non-GPU projects, and did scale back on the d/l.

I also have scaled back my cache settings to allow just enough work for 2-3 days.

8) Message boards : Number crunching : No credit past the deadline? (Message 3822)
Posted 5614 days ago by computerguy09
I think the answer is "It depends".

A WU is sent to, at least, 2 crunchers. If the deadline for you to return the WU is past, the scheduler on the server sends out a WU to a third PC. If you return the WU late, but before that third cruncher returns their WU, then you probably will get credit for it.

I've had several WU's that were returned late by a few hours and still got credit for them. However, if it was a day late, and the second and third crunchers returned their WU's, then I did NOT get credit.

9) Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : BOINC 6.3.12 for Windows released (Message 2615)
Posted 5663 days ago by computerguy09
LOL...

On my quad it only runs PS3GRID on 1 cpu/gpu and leaves the other cores idle even though under 6.3.11 it would run other projects on the other cores....back to 6.3.11 for me.

Did you set your preferences to allow more than 1 CPU/GPU to run?

10) Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : Need copy of BOINC 6.3.8 or higher for Vista 32bit (Message 1576)
Posted 5699 days ago by computerguy09
I would like to participate in the beta test of the GPU client on my Nvidia 8600GTS. I just upgraded my Nvidia drivers to a CUDA version, and then went to get a copy of BOINC 6.3.8. However, the main Berkeley site or even thru the "...\download_all.php" link no longer provides a copy of anything higher than 6.2.16 (or .18).

Since I'm running Vista Ultimate (32 bit), I need a copy for Windows. The link here only shows the Linux version...

Can I get a good pointer?

Thanks,

Mark
(Note that I'm a long time BOINC'er, and did run YD Linux on my PS3 for awhile, but am now just running Folding@Home on my PS3)
