I can't believe I did that, I had put it on "suspend GPU activity" while the PSU was dying and forgot to re-enable it afterwards. It was just a stupid mistake on my part, though it seems weird that it doesn't show up in the event log. Thanks.

Uh, I just proofread that and I didn't mean "reset" in the last paragraph there. I meant resume.

BOINC doesn't seem to actually start GPUGRID tasks, and I'm not sure how long this has been the case on my machine. My computer has a GTX 260 and is running Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) 64-bit with the standard versions of all the relevant software from the repositories. That means BOINC 6.12.33 with proprietary NVIDIA driver 280.13 (Linux-x86_64). My event log looks like this:

The GPUGRID task simply remains in the "Ready to Start" state. At first I thought I might have done something stupid, like suspended the project temporarily and forgotten to reset it. But the status field under projects is blank. As you can see from the computer's page, it hasn't been working for a long time. That's because my computer's PSU died during the Thanksgiving break, and the new one took a long time to arrive. This one *should* be more than powerful enough to run everything if the per-rail amp ratings are right, though.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
4) Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : acemd2_6.03_windows_intelx86__cuda has stopped working (Message 17087)
Posted 5085 days ago by Jack
I just recently had this happen on my GTX-260 (216 55nm) Win7 64-bit rig, but it turned out to be just because I had started a graphics-intensive program (FarCry2) and had forgotten to stop BOINC first. Apparently when the GPU gets overloaded to that extent (trying to run both FC2 and the GPUGRID task) the entire graphics driver crashes and the task gets a computation error status. It was obviously a stupid mistake on my part. Restarting the machine and aborting the task fixed it.

The computer in question is here:

the task in question is here:

I won't do that again.

I'll be sticking with my 216-core GTX260 for now because I can't afford an upgrade, but the specs are incredible. It looks like the card is made using 40nm manufacturing tech, maybe they'll be able to shrink the die to 32nm by the time I have enough to $ get myself one.

Okay, thanks, I just fixed it. I just did a lazy and insecure hack to get it to work. here was my solution:
terminal:
sudo gedit /etc/gnome-system-tools/users/profiles

edit file to include the following line under [Unprivileged]:

groups=video

Yes, I have installed the CUDA drivers. see screenshot for details:

I do not know why BIONC isn't recognizing the GPU. I had to manually fetch libcudart.so, which I placed in boinc's directory.
other info about the machine:

AMD Phenom 2 X3 2.6GHz
2GB RAM in a single 1333MHz DDR3 stick
one GTX 260
Ubuntu 9.04 64 w/latest updates
BOINC 6.4.5 64

note that I used GIMP to quickly and crudely edit out the username
