By chance I've checked what is the first thread here on the forum and I've found this:
Message 1 - Posted: 5 May 2007 | 17:32:47 UTC by GDF

Can a PS3 be used as a normal computer?
The answer is provided by GDF as well 4 minutes later, and it goes like this:

Yes, you can dual boot on the PS3 gaming operating system or Linux. We suggest Yellow Dog Linux or Fedora core 5. Follow the instructions for installation in the main PS3GRID page.
However, remember that the Cell processor is not a normal processor. It will perform only on specially optimized code like the one developed by us.
In our case we achieve performances 20 times faster compared to an Opteron 2Ghz PC.
Though the information in these messages are obsolete, from the time stamps it seems that this project has started exactly 10 years ago.

Congratulations for everyone who ever contributed to this project!
Let you be a scientist, developer or cruncher be proud of your contribution!

10 years time may not sound that long, but if I look at the technological development of computing of this time period I'm amazed.
It's uplifting how much research has been carried out by us with the technology we possess.
Let's forget the daily troubles we had along this long way for a moment and celebrate!
However, humanity is still very far from understanding nature completely (including ourselves); we haven't done yet.
So I wish that we do keep up this good work for at least the next 10 years!
