Hi:

I have been donating CPU time to the World Community Grid for several years now. While WCG allows me to fully use the CPU, its projects do not allow me to use my GPU. This is why I joined GPUGrid.

I have two laptops.

1. Dell XPS laptop with an Intel 2670QM processor, Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU with 12 MB of RAM installed. When I login into my account with GPUGrid, the correct configuration of this laptop is there. But I have yet to receive a WU from GPUGrid.

2. Alienware laptop with an Intel 3740QM processor, Nvidia GeForce GT 660M GPU with 12 MB of RAM installed. When I login into my account with GPUGrid, the GPU is not recognized. I am getting GPUGrid WUs on this laptop but they are being processed using only the CPU and not the GPU.

The OS on both of these laptops is Windows 7 64 bit.

Are there any solutions to these issues I am experiencing?

An update:

I have solved the issue with the Dell XPS laptop.

Still have to work out the issue with the Nvidia GTX 660M video card. I have installed the latest drivers from Nvidia for this card.

Can anyone be of assistance?

You seem to have a GPU task running on the GT555M but the GT 660M does not appear. It's likely that on your 3740QM system that you have installed Boinc as a service. To run GPU tasks you need to install Boinc again and not as a service.

Hi Moderator:

Yes, I now have a GPUGRID WU using the Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU while WCG WUs use the CPU.

So one problem down, one problem to go.

When I uninstall Bonic on the Alienware laptop, do I lose all the WUs (work units) on the laptop? Should I use the No new work command so that no more work is downloaded to this laptop before I uninstall and reinstall Bonic?

Just reinstall the same version of BOINC you currently have. The setup will let you choose different options. Make sure to tick "advanced settings", though, to get there. If you uninstall you will loose all work, but that's not needed :)

Hi As you have suggested, I have reinstalled BONIC on my Alienware laptop.

If you view the details of my laptops, you will see that the Nvidia Geforce VC is still not recognized by CFUGRID/NET.

I reinstalled BONIC not as a service.

Can you suggest some additional steps that I can undertake?

Can you post the first 20 or 30 lines of the BOINC log, so we can see some information about the system and setup that might give a clue?

Just one trivia: make sure you are running with the dGPU (GTX 660) instead of iGPU (Intel) if you have the option.

Hi:

Thanks for this suggestion.

I do not think I have that option.

Make sure you're not accessing the machine via remote desktop and make sure the nVidia driver is installed.

MrS has a good point, with nVidia driver installed, open the nVidia control panel and if it says that there is no GPU, then the dGPU is not enabled.
There should be a key on your keyboard that says "I/D GFX" that can be accessed with "Fn" key to turn on or off the dGPU.

Hi Everyone:

The issue I was experiencing with the Nvidia 660M video card on my Alienware laptop has been resolved and the video card is crunching away.

Thanks to everyone who assisted me.

Hi Mr. S

The issue I was having was I needed to d/l an Intel driver first before I could update the Ndivia video card driver. But which one? Geforce Experience did not tell me. On Windows update, I have seen the installation of Intel HD400 driver fail but I gambled on downloading the Intel HD 400 video driver from Intel.com. It worked! Then I went ahead and updated Ndivia driver to the latest version. Now the video card is crunching away for GPUGrid and the CPU is doing the same for the World Community Grid while I am doing emails and other things.

This is the result I wanted to achieve.

Thanks, Clive.

BTW: the GPU in your i7-3740QM could also crunch Einstein@Home, if it can be active together with the nVidia.
