This has happened a few times during testing, we get some work for a few days and then there is a pause, usually when they are analyzing what we did to make a change, as GDF states below. To me this is just normal project start up growing pains, so to speak. Just sit back and relax, and every thing will be running smoothly soon. I\'ve got a good supply of rum and ice, so no worries here.

As far as project testing goes, this has been one of the best so far with the least amount of problems.

See Credit system thread in number crunching for answer to the credit question.

Thanks a lot!

I know that is a beta testing phase.

Just for information, because they don\'t tell how long test will be runing, how many WU are test.

And for this question, i put it because i don\'t know if i made an error and get this error message, or if the problem is not a problem.

And i\'m reading to the forum, so i saw the post for new credit system.

Sorry for my bad english if i wrote some non-english sentence ;-)

I saw it about 30 min, and again \"no work from project\"!

That\'s strange!
I saw in BOINC, a new WU download at 00h30 (GMT+1), like it was said sooner.

So, normal or not?

See the Server Status page at http://www.ps3grid.net/PS3GRID/server_status.php

This will tell you the status of the scheduler which sends work, and if there is any work to be sent out. If the scheduler is running and it shows work units to be sent, and you get this message, then yes there is a problem.

I think you are just missing the small batches being sent.

Maybe Gianni can comment on this better what is going on.

I was just guessing before, we get some and then there is a break while he waits to see if everything is running smoothly with the first of that batch. Then if the first few are ok we get some more.

I\'ve been testing projects for 3-4 years now, I guess to me its normal and does not seem to be like anything is wrong.

Work for everyone now.

As you say, I have been sending out a small batch with the new credits and new work to test.
It is longer than the previous one (around 21 hours now), but as before you can safely restart and finish in several days (< 7days).

We are still testing the shorter workunits.

I can\'t answer that, but remember:

#1 The host will retrieve more work to fill the queue before the current one finishes.
#2 When finished the result may be uploaded, but then there can be a delay between the uplaod and the time the host reports it has uploaded, so it would still appear as work in progress by looking at a users account page.

I sometimes show 3 on my system, 1 running, 1 waiting to run and 1 uploading or waiting to report.

Thats good. Don\'t be afraid to ask any question. As you say it might be a problem and without asking, no one knows.

And to quote some thing else you said
Jim wrote:

Thats the purpose of my answers, I just try to give some useful information, not just for the person asking, but for all who might be reading and have the same question and maybe not know as much about BOINC.

Jim wrote:

No need to appologize for that. I don\'t speak or read any other languages, beside english and computerish, so I give you a salute for making the effort. I also find, not refering to you specifically, that it is sometimes humorous how it is written, I like that. Usually the point is made and can be understood, the the most important.

You\'re very useful for this project, always good informations or answer!

Well thank you, I don\'t hear that a whole lot and its always nice to know I helped at least one person, that compliment makes it all worth the effort. :)

Oops, I think I should get back to work now.

Hi all,

I\'m unable to download new work, maybe there is some maintenance work being done on the server? (On the server stats page the upload/download and scheduler server are listed as \'disabled\'.

Hereby my log:

2007-11-28 21:14:21 [PS3GRID] Sending scheduler request: To fetch work
2007-11-28 21:14:21 [PS3GRID] Requesting 1728000 seconds of new work
2007-11-28 21:14:26 [PS3GRID] Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 601]
2007-11-28 21:14:26 [PS3GRID] Deferring communication for 31 sec
2007-11-28 21:14:26 [PS3GRID] Reason: requested by project
2007-11-28 21:14:26 [PS3GRID] Deferring communication for 1 min 0 sec
2007-11-28 21:14:26 [PS3GRID] Reason: no work from project

I\'ll temporarily switch to yoyo@home.

Unfortunately I\'ve to detach from PS3GRID and re-attach to yoyo (and back), even with the setting \'Leave applications in memory while suspended\' set to \'no\' in both projects.

It seems that the SPE\'s in my playstions are not always correctly freed while both projects are attached at the same time.

Anyone more luck with running PS3GRID and yoyo@home as backup-project at the same time?

Kind regards,
Iw@n

It always shows that, has done so ever since the beginning. PS3GRID is run on a shared server and the necessary component to show the correct status is not able to be installed or was not installed.

---

There should be no reason to detach one and attach the other, then back.
You could just \'suspend\' the one project and \'resume\' the other.

I usually have no problems. I at one time set my resource share to the following, PS3GRID=4096, YOYO=1 and keep both active. Then normally PS3GRID is run and only will you get Yoyo when there is no work available from PS3GRID for any number of reasons. Just make the difference between the two very large.

Hi Keith,

I\'ve set the resource share to PS3GRID=4096, YOYO=1 on both of my Playstations.

Also i\'ve configured BOINC to log to /var/log/boinc.log (before i logged only to /dev/null/ ;-))

I\'m very curious if PS3GRID and Yoyo@home can work together with the Cell SPE\'s while switching programs.

Both projects are now enabled on my Playstations, in the next days i can maybe tell more about the results.

Kind regards,
Iw@n

Thats hard to say without some log line examples.

Is the project set to receive work ?
Did you suspend it or set \'no new work\' by accident ?

Try to exit boinc client and restart or shut down PS3 and restart.

I\'ve checked all of this. This is a server side problem. People are finishing WU but getting no new work. The number of WU available to send have increased over the past couple of days but the number of WU being crunched has decreased dramatically. One could infer that as they are being finished they are getting nothing in return, just as I am.

I\'m not alone, there is another thread in this forum: No Work From Project? claiming the exact same thing as I am. Just disregard the (On the server stats page the upload/download and scheduler server are listed as \'disabled\'.\" portion as this is irrelevant.

So when can I expect new work :\\

So I checked the WU, it appears to be moving along but BOINC records Zero percent done even though it has counted over 8 hours of crunch time. Does this seem normal?

Actually, I rebooted and the WU has completely started over again. Zero percent complete, zero time elapsed. I\'m going to abort this WU and try another.

Hi all,

After the server reboot (see http://www.ps3grid.net/forum_thread.php?id=112&nowrap=true#516) I sucesfully download two new work units, one is already completed ;-)

Unfortunately I didn\'t succeed in running PS3GRID and yoyo@home together, I suspect yoyo does not correctly free the SPE\'s after program termination...)

I\'m actually running at PS3GRID = 136.61 and Yoyo = 24 and SIMAP = 1.
I need the 24 for my other computers, but on the PS3 this gave me about 6 tasks a week for PS3GRID (until they got a little longer) and then 19 hours a week for Yoyo. I have not had any problems in the past 2 or 3 weeks running this way. Generally it will run PS3GRID and Yoyo and only fall back to some SIMAP if there is not work available from the others.

I will watch closely, but since my last restart I have 2 completed PS3GRID and the 3rd task running with a 4th ready to go, so it should only be a couple of more days before some yoyo has to run.

I\'ve been running these several months in combination, without any problem.

Do you have:
Leave applications in memory while suspended?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if \'yes\')
set to NO

if NO, this should remove the app from memory when switching occurs and that would have to release the SPE\'s.

Several of the users had this problem until changing above setting, then it went away.

I\'m happy to report I found the answer to this and sent GDF the details which he was able to apply and get to tweek. Both the upload/download server and scheduler now show as green - running. This should solve some of the confusion. Thanks to GDF for fixing this for us.

From now on if there is something wrong and someone can not get work, check the status page to see if the server shows other than not running. If it is running and the work ready to send is greater than 0 you should get work. However, remember that page is usually cached, and updated every 15 or so minutes, the time of last update is shown on the page, so it is possible if the work available number is low, like 1, someone else could have already got the work and it has not updated the cached page yet to show the actual number, like 0. This applies to all projects.

Yes, I have done all of the above. This exact problem occurred awhile back:

but specifically this message by GDF:

I sent GDF an Email, let´s hope he will have a look at the server sometime soon...

BTW if your post is marked as spam because of a Link in it, just add some random text and it will pass the spam filter... ;)

Sounds good, thanks!

still \"no work from project\" -> I\'m WU-hungry since days :/

Since this project is \"Out of Order\" might I suggest that everyone have a second project for their PS3 crunching needs. AFAIK, the only other project besides PS3grid that utilizes the full potential of all the PS3\'s power is yoyo@home.

Sorry guys and gals.

No word from or signs of GDF yet. I\'ve notified him by several emails. He must be taking a long weekend and of course whenever that happens the project is sure to break.

Be patient and this will get corrected as soon as possible.

As most of you know, there was some kind of server error yesterday. Mostly forums or data driven pages were out of order. It has been fixed as all works fine now.

It seems GDF is missing in action. A report has him spotted in Mexico/Guatemala.

Please be patient with awaiting answers to problems during his absence.

I do now have a way to make contact should we have more server problems and hopefully get it back working more quickly.

Message 749 - Posted: 13 Jan 2008 | 15:38:00 UTC - in response to Message 80.

This morning i received this message in BOINC.

So right now there is no more work from project PS3GRID?

There will be new work tonight. We are changing the credit system.

Have you guys solved the PS3 firmware problem by making a new USB build image?

That would be nice, as I have been on zero success since I began here.

Sure, I could run the client from one of my HD installs, but that is not my goal. My goal is to get it up and running off my thumb drive USB stick. The new otheros.bld file, and a new kernel from Geoff at Sony incorporated into your \"pen drive\" zip file would be nice. Not complaining, just reminding you that it has been a while since this problem reared its ugly head. Doesn\'t look like the quoting thing on this board works right... I dunno.

I see these messages too on my PS3.

I have reported this problem to GDF and GG, hopefully someone will be able to look into very soon and get the scheduler back to sending work.

Note: This was at 231 Ready to Send, 152 in progress.

New server

For some mysterious reasons the new server is less reliable than the old one.
The number of times it goes down is much more. In the next few days, we will try to do an update of all software components to see if the situation improves.
Part of the problems we had in restoring it quickly was due to the fact that no one was around during Christmas.

Hope that the stability goes back to normal ps3grid standard soon.

Best, gdf

We are testing new workunits, while the old ones are ending. There will be a large batch submission once they have been validated. Probably, tomorrow.

Now it\'s the second day my PS3s are running on idle because of \'no work from project\'. There are three rigs in the top twenty that suffer this fate. Is there anything I/we can do to get new WU\'s soon ?
