Hello!
I have a GTX 460. I installed the drivers and the cuda drivers yet my work always fails. Recently I decided that maybe it was because my drivers weren't the right version. So I updated everything.
Debian Squeeze 64bit
NVidia drivers: 260.24
CUDA toolkit 3.2RC is installed and my PATH is correct.
Einstein@home works and me dabbling in CUDA programming works.

I have read the fermi postings on this forum, I read the GTX 460 postings on this forum, and from what I can tell I should have everything set correctly. Yet my work keeps failing. So before I ruin any more work units, I thought that now is a good time to ask for help.

Does anyone know what I have done wrong? Can someone please help?

Can you try to upgrade your Boinc client to 6.10.58 ? Maybe that can help too.

You could also try boinc-manager 06.11.7 (beta) and nvidiadriver 260.1904 (beta). This should work!!

I can vaguely remember reading that the linux 260 series were not ready for prime time yet, i.e. cause problems at GPU-Grid. Not 100% sure though.

Upgraded to 6.10.58. No luck there either as it killed another work unit. :/

I have concidered going to the betas but I figured I should ask first before I really mess things up.

Thanks for the link. I didn't see that one. I couldn't get the recommeneded drivers to work with gpugrid and I saw that some people were getting better luck with the later drivers for the fermi based cards so I decided to try these drivers.

Sorry for the odd multiple postings. Buttons didn't work the way I thought they did...

Thanks for the suggestion, but that looks like an Ubuntu kernel. I am currently running Debian Squeeze on this box for work related testing. I kinda need to stick with the Debian Sqeeze kernel long term. Any other suggestions?

However, in the short term I totally don't mind giving it a go for experimental purposes. I don't know if I will have time tonight but I will try tomorrow. Never have even thought about attempting an Ubuntu kernel swap into Debian (or visa versa) so that should be an interesting experiment on its own. I can also try building the latest stable kernel from kernel.org and giving that a go if you think that might help.

Out of pure curiosity, I noticed that you have "Forum moderator, Project tester, Volunteer tester" under your name. Has there been any significant testing of Debian Sqeeze that you know of? Or are you (or others) pretty much just waiting til it is closer to release? _If_ the kernel swap does indeed work, then a bug report may need to be filled out to the Debian kernel group.

I'm pretty sure GTX 460s only work on windows with GPU Grid right now, but I can not find where it's posted.

They should be releasing new apps for Linux soon now that summer vacations are over.

I suspect all your 6.06 tasks fail for your GTX460 on Linux because your system is using a CUDA 30 GPU application; fine for a GTX 480, 470 and 465, but not for the GTX460. So I dont think there is a Linux based GPUGrid app that works for the GTX460. I would like someone to tell me I am wrong but the GTX460 is a CC2.1 card, and quite unlike the CC2.0 (GF100) cards, that can run 6.06 tasks from Linux - the GTX460 has different architecture, e.g. different ROP to Shader ratios.

I think an app that would work for a GTX460 would require CUDA 3.1 or 3.2.

There is a CUDA 3.1 based app for Windows, but perhaps there was issues with the CUDA 3.1 Linux version and the programmers had to wait to work on a CUDA 3.2 app instead.

- Update. Just confirming that this is the situation. We are waiting on a Cuda 3.2 based Linux app, as there was a bug in Cuda 3.1.

Either use the card in the existing system for another project, until this project has a working Linux app for your card, don't crunch for a while, or use it in a Windows system (xp is best). You might be able to dual boot. Under Linux it might work on Folding@home (non-boinc), MilkyWay, Einstein, and other projects.

Well, Milkyway on an nVidia is not worth it in my opinion: the GTX460 can only use 8% of its maximum performance there, whereas current ATIs can use 40%. And we've got many of them crunching there.
