This forum is now used for the upcoming multicore CPU application. If you want to run on CPUs for GPUGRID you need to accept beta work.

I'm up for that one - preferences set to accept cpu & cpu test work.

Sounds interesting! :)

Do you think CPUs will bring a big computing power to the project ?

CPU will be marginal at GPUGRID. For certain short workunits we can use CPUs as well, but work will be most likely going in bursts.

cool... i assume this is a mutli-threaded app correct.. like aqua@home???

Yes multithreaded. | |

Yes multithreaded. thank you for clearing that (technical jargon) up.. my boinc client is open and willingly to accept the new cpu work, i'll keep my work queue low so that it ask for cpu work..

sounds great, I'm excited to see how this project is expanding. :)

Please note that the recent run of recommended BOINC clients (v6.10.17 / v6.10.18) are less than ideal for running multi-threaded CPU applications if you are also attached to projects which issue standard single-threaded CPU applications. The multithreading works fine, but CPU cores can be left idle when the other projects should be running.

did the project hit a speed bump with this subject or have some wu's gone out?

BOINC v6.10.19 can now be downloaded for testing, and handles task-switching with singled-threaded CPU projects much better than .17 or .18

did the project hit a speed bump with this subject or have some wu's gone out? take a look here : http://www.gpugrid.net/apps.php the new app isn't out yet

To date we have been unable to get an acceptable level of performance on even the highest end processors (dual X5570), so we've paused development of this application for the moment. We will review it again as OpenCL CPU compilers improve.

While it's true that performance and productivity will never come close to GPU crunching I strongly believe the option for CPU crunching should be made available.

I agree with coldFuSion. Still many don't have a supported GPU, as long as ATI doesn't work, that's a lot of people, plus all those with neither Nvidia nor ATI. Maybe extra credits for CPU only tasks would help too. WCG even made a Facebook APP that doesn't require BOINC client to be installed. Even a million drops adds up to something even though a drop itself isn't much.

Perhaps, but not so much for the present as for the future:

I hope this is brought back near the front of the list after the ati app is out and working, i have one nvidia card that can run gpugrid, and a ati(2600 xt), that maybe able to run the new ati app, well see, but i doubt that it would be fast enough to make a deadline, i would however like to use my quad core q6600 and one of my old p4-ht systems for gpugrid.

The project concentrates on GPU tasks. That quote is over a year old. I don't even think that sandy bridge will offer enough to draw the project towards CPU use, but it might facilitate AMD cards and I expect other projects to try to fully utilise these processors. I think Sandy Bridge will be launched on the 7th Jan.
